Responding to "Sail Away"
Neria saw Kaiel in the science booth beside Clicker. The furball sat on his special platform-mount, allowing him to roll back and forth with ease, operating the console. "Welcome to the bridge, Mr. Kaiel. Do the science facilities meet with your approval?"
"Thank you, Captain April," Kaiel said, inclining his head towards her. "The facilities appear to be state of the art. I am sure they will exceed my expectations, let alone my approval."
Kaiel was finding this true of all the accommodations aboard the Arcadia. That included both physical and metaphorical accommodations.
He had been pleased to help Avi get moved in to quarters, then he had gone to explore his own, in more detail. They were quite comfortable, and were, like the bridge station, equipped with state of the art amenities. He had unpacked his sparse belongings, set the environmental controls for his own comforts, and had explored the workings of the replicators, computer terminals, and living functions. This was better than most passenger liners, in fact, and he supposed he would have no complaints whatsoever, as far as his room and board were concerned.
Prior to launch, he had also scouted out the science offices and labs. There, he discovered the ranking science officer aboard the ship was... well... a furry tumbleweed, with some sort of cybernetic augmentations. Someone had referred to this amazing creature as a tribble, and Kaiel had learned its name was Clicker: at least, that was what everyone called it. Both the science officer, and science facilities, had amazed the Sirenn. He had served aboard larger ships, but none had been so well equipped. Arcadia made good use of design, to put the most function into its science compartments. Kaiel imagined the Arcadia's science capabilities rivaled those of much larger ships in the fleet. They were certainly above par, for the two ships Kaiel had previously served aboard. So he would not suffer professionally, either.
He had been surprised, to be invited to the bridge for launching. He still thought of himself as something akin to a guest aboard, rather than crew. But, Clicker had bounded along with him, seemingly content to have him on the bridge. So, Kaiel stood, studying the boards, and studying the bridge and its crew.
His feeling of being more guest, than crew, was already fading. Even Captain April's solicitous comments to him, during the launching of the ship from spacedock, were evidence of his acceptance. Kaiel had supposed his gracious welcome during the party had been an off-duty relaxation of more formal military behaviors. His experiences told him that even visiting military personnel were often held at a distance, by the home crew of Starfleet ships. Civilians were even a more distant oddity. But, in the few hours he had been aboard, Kaiel felt none of that sort of exclusivism. Just as Eve and Avi had shown open friendliness at the party, Lt. Cdr. Ordalani, and Lt. na-Ki'tiki, presently treated him with just as much acceptance as if the uniform he wore had insignia upon it. He sported his new comm badge proudly, as if it were symbolic of their including him, and of his pride at being accepted among them.
Yes, the accommodations were proving most acceptable; most acceptable, indeed.
Kaiel smiled, and hoped he did not disappoint those around him. He did not feel performance pressure, as much as a social or personal desire to excel. This environment was awash in positive vibes, and Kaiel meant to put his best efforts forward, to contribute to that. It was the least he could do, to show his appreciation.
Even the Arcadia appeared to pick up on that eagerness, as she turned her nose towards the stars and sprang into motion.
