Alternate timeline

An "alternate timeline" is a history diverging from a previously existing timeline, typically the result of time travel, wherein character actions cause the divergence. In Arcadia's definition, these are not strictly parallel universes, which exist independently of the time travel mechanism, though sequential events can parallel the base timeline ("parallel timeline"). They can be considered alternate universes, since creating a new timeline entails a new universe (presumably through a quantum effect).
Time travel or quantum folding may "cancel" (eliminate) alternate timelines (causing them to cease existence), yet their information theoretically continues to exist relative to the base timeline, especially if they are remembered.
- From an out-of-character perspective, Arcadia, like any fan fiction continuity, is an alternate timeline compared to the "canon" Trek universe. Star Trek itself can be considered an alternate timeline, as a possible future, and in the Arcadia universe, this is literally true.
Many alternate timelines have been seen, visited, mentioned or posited in Arcadia.
