"You're Kelly Nacin, right? Jordan Rampart. I'm your new CO." He offered a hand.
Kelly accepted his hand and returned the smile. "I know. I recognize you from your personnel file. It's nice to finally meet you." She glanced around at all of the people in the gym. Most of them were discretely attempting to catch a glimpse of the new captain. "I forgot how busy this place has been the past few weeks, but now I know why everyone got excited while I was on my way here. You've been the subject of quite a few rumors since your arrival."
That elicited a wary look. "Oh really." Rampart rubbed his jaw, regarding her, taking quick breaths. "I thought your last captain killed the rumor mill on this ship."
"One thing I've learned about starships, is that the rumors will always find a way to spread. When April was aboard, the crew just had a more... discrete way of talking. Since he's been gone, they've reverted back to the blatant gossiping that April attempted to squelch out." She looked around the room once more. "Quite a few people on this ship are new, they never had time to get to know how a captain ran this ship. There have been so many revolving crew members, I think it's easier for them to gossip about you than each other."
What a nice thing to say to someone you just met.
"I think you've gotten the wrong impression, Lieutenant. I've seen the crew roster. The same people are here who've been here for a while now – last month-and-a-half, minimum. And as for the gossip... if you're right... That's not good." Rampart tilted his head, recalling a private thought. "I guess Admiral April said it: Someone forgot, the Starfleet manual discourages gossip. And you listen to it, and this crew engages in it. Okay." He made a face. "Either I'm in the wrong Starfleet, or the rest of this ship is. I thought we treated each other with respect; that we're more—" He paused, searching for a term. "—grown-up, than that. Can't be much to say, since none of you know me..." He checked his wrist-chronometer. "...but it's gratifying to know you talk about me – and think so poorly of your previous CO. We'll have to work on that. Thanks. Excuse me." He hooked a thumb over his shoulder. "More laps. Enjoy your rumors." He took off running again.
