"Galaxy Alpha" was a popular term for the Milky Way galaxy, applied in a formal sense (as opposed to the more generic "the galaxy") starting in the late 24th century, as exploration efforts reached other galaxies. "Alpha", first letter of the Greek alphabet, was synonymous with first in order of importance in human culture. As such, it reflected a feeling of home, importance and origin in the galaxy.
The galaxy was divided into four large regions or quadrants, also bearing Greek letter designations: Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.
