The Demilitarized Zone (abbreviated DMZ) was a neutral zone created between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Empire in 307 CE. Political arrangements barred a military presence in the DMZ by either side, and displaced Federation and Cardassian colonists from certain planets. As a result, the DMZ became a hotbed of protest and armed conflict among those affected (e.g. Maquis). Some Maquis insurgents hoped to establish an independent nation in DMZ territory, free from Federation or Cardassian authority, despite Cardassian-sponsored attacks during the Dominion War.
Cardassia's absorption into the Federation (320 CE) officially eliminated the Demilitarized Zone.
