Mala was surprised when Lt. Tryce, just moments after they'd met, invited her for a drink.
She wasn't sure how she wanted to respond.  Because she couldn't know how he meant the invitation.  Surely he wasn't asking her for a real date, before he knew anything about her – such as whether she had any personal commitments.  Probably he just wanted to get acquainted with someone in the crew, and she'd arrived at the opportune time.
Mala still wasn't accustomed to thinking of herself as "involved" with Jer.  Were they really a couple?  She didn't know.  She could only hope.  She hadn't even seen Jeremy Haskins since she was released from her holodeck captivity.  They just kept missing each other.  And she hadn't wanted to distract him during the emergency.
Besides, she argued with herself, regardless of her relationship with Jer, they both needed to have acquaintanceships, even friendships, among the crew.  Life went better that way, aboard ship.
Mala smiled, and looked toward Griff.  "I think a coffee would suit me better.  But I'll need to finish the holodeck diagnostics.  Two more to go."
Then, before Griff could reply, Mala's com sounded and she turned away to answer.  It was the ensign on flight control duty.
"Ma'am, I think you'll need to report to the bridge.  Some sort of ship is headed toward us."
Mala could think of several questions, but decided to keep it short.  "Thanks, Ensign.  Be right there."  She stepped back to Griff and said, "Sorry.  I'll have to postpone.  Duty calls."
