The Community of Erinnya is a huge, safe nation, remarkable for its national health service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 657 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The government – a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked morass – juggles the competing demands of the environment, law & order, and religion & spirituality. The average income tax rate is 30%. A large private sector is dominated by the trout farming industry.

Erinnya's airwaves are dominated by corporate-backed commercial radio, sex offenders find themselves 'cut off' from any ability to repeat their crimes, the government is spending millions on renovating the public transportation system, and government-run screening operations remove embryos with severe genetic disorders. Crime – especially youth-related – is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Erinnya's national animal is the white tiger, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the grotto.
