Humans were the dominant race throughout the known universe, credited with primary operation of the Federation and Starfleet; the pioneers of sentient (and possibly all) life, including, directly or indirectly, the creation of aliens, genetically engineered or descended from humans. By the late 4th century CE (circa 347), billions of humans populated the galaxy.

The collective designation humanity often applied symbolically, indicating the quality of being human, perpetuating nobler aspects of human ideals. This influenced the naming of the UFS Humanity.

"Humanity" often carries a symbolic, "behind the scenes" context in Arcadia usage; for example, the Humanity's destruction = humanity's destruction / potential (self-)destruction.

For centuries, Earth humans believed in creation by a divine mechanism (i.e. God); this belief diminished in the scientific age, giving way to evolution theory, which was almost unanimously accepted in the Federation by the 4th century CE. However, temporal observations and cro-g mapping proved evolution incorrect, discovering that humans arose suddenly, supporting creationism, though without proof of divine intervention. The exact mechanism for human beginnings remains shrouded in mystery.

Humans inhabited planets apart from Earth prior to Earth's warp age, each responsible for further colonization of space by various methods (in addition to Earth, which received colonial visits from some of these). Many ancient cultures predating humanity or the Federation were believed to be human or closely related, such as the Coricians, Iconians and Preservers.

As humans gained the ability of time travel/temporal interaction, they created many conditions which enabled their own existence, giving rise to myriad forms of alien life. (The Seeders also came from humans. How this fits with the changelings' transtemporal contribution to Seeder existence is unclear.)

This basic idea, that humans created alien life, stems from two real-life conditions:
  1. The clear absence of aliens (in a universe which should be teeming with them), summed up in the Rare Earth hypothesis;
  2. We, humans, create such life in fiction... the only place aliens exist.
