Pwawk
Pwawk were the dominant intelligent lifeform on
Aspidiske (
Iota Carinæ) III, evolved from
plankton-like
amphipoda. Aspidiske had intermittent contact with
space explorers for centuries, from ancient
Vulcans to the
Federation; its environment was extremely inhospitable to
humanoids.
Starfleet first visited Aspidiske in the
22nd century.
Aspidiske III was home to a complex ecosystem of airborne lifeforms who propelled themselves on chemical winds by expelling a luminescent gas, which created a visible aura around their bodies. The Pwawk joined the Federation in 316 CE. Sh'wsh'sh'kk't (nicknamed "Swish") was the first of their kind in Starfleet. His "aura" protected him from Arcadia's shipboard atmosphere. Storing excess air and energy within hollows along his outer shell gave him buoyancy, allowing him to float. He proved a bit clumsy however, occasionally bumping into bulkheads and other crew-members.
