Jacob MacKenzie was a Starfleet captain who visited the Mariposa colony, following the USS Enterprise-D's integration of Bringloidi colonists in 302 CE[1]. The Mariposans had cloned the Bringloidi, causing their population to triple overnight, which caused a civil war.
Sympathetic to their plight, MacKenzie, seeking to restore order, cloned himself with Mariposan technology, creating a peacekeeping force to end the conflict. Despite his intent, Starfleet banished him for his actions. The Federation Council recognized his clones as sentient individuals with legal rights, and several joined Starfleet, distinguished by personal names.
