Quantum-class starship
The Quantum -class starship, introduced in late 316 CE, began as a redesign of the Intrepid class (uprated).  The UFS Arcadia, first of the line (launched 315), was an uprated Intrepid-class vessel featuring most major advances of the time, plus the first stable, working quantum slipstream drive developed exclusively in the Federation.  Security concerns halted manufacture of QSD ships in late 315, leaving Arcadia the sole vessel of her kind until the ban's lift in 316.  Rather than continue uprating Intrepids, Starfleet Research & Development produced a new class based on studies in Arcadia's first year of service, incorporating other advances in starship operation and hull-variable geometry.  Arcadia underwent an extensive redesign/refit over the course of three months (late 316-early 317), becoming the prototype.  By 322, twelve such vessels had been launched.  Twenty-five were commissioned by 324.

While combining aspects of Intrepid- and Prometheus -class starships, Quantum-class vessels were technologically superior and proportionately larger.  The major feature was quantum slipstream drive, requiring reconfigured hull geometry and differences in internal design & structural efficiency.  These ships were modified to permit quick swaps of modular sections in accord with specific mission profiles and design updates, such as new bridge modules (located on deck 3).  Combat proficiency was also enhanced, in keeping with the Federation's credo of a new "golden age of peace" through superior firepower.  Examples included:

  • "anticloaking" sensors – able to detect cloaked ships;
  • phase-shifting "smart" torpedoes (altering trajectory to match target course & position and penetrate shields by adapting to power output);
  • regenerative multi-matrix shielding;
  • self-reproducing ablative armor (in high-conflict areas),

cumulatively making this "new breed" of Starfleet highly invulnerable, to the point that battle was rare and brief when necessary.

Quantum-class ships sustained a maximum warp velocity of 9.99, ranking them among Starfleet's fastest warp-drive vessels.

Holoemitters installed throughout these ships allowed holographic crew supplements in all areas.  Other additions included extra decks for scientific research (supporting dedicated multi-tasking science departments) and a wide array of auxiliary craft (necessitating double-tier flight deck capacity), enabling forays deeper into unexplored space than most Federation ships traveled.  (See specs.)  Overall, this made the Quantum-class superbly equipped for long-range exploration, diplomacy and defense.

First Quantum -class starship constructed.  Built from a previously existing Intrepid -class frame, USS Arcadia; launched 315.  First to be christened with the "UFS" prefix (United Federation Starship) assigned to long-range exploration vessels.  Named for the region in Earth's Peloponnese, Greece.
Planned for launch by 324.
One of the four original Quantum-class ships commissioned; second launched.  Assisted Arcadia during the Grazellian affair, 315 Caledonia was the ancient Roman name for Scotland.
Replaced the UFS Messenia, 319.
