"Omega attacks" rip subspace apart, render warp travel useless through much of Federation space, maroon a handful of Federation worlds in their own systems, destroy key starbases, and strand some Federation citizens decades of sublight travel from their nearest neighbors or Starfleet protection. Investigating, the Federation discovers evidence of Romulan involvement and declares war, despite Romulan denial. With large sectors of space impassable at warp speed, the war devolves into spatial trench warfare, with heavy losses and little advancement on either side. (Star Trek: Final Frontier)
• 415 CE: A truce ends the second Romulan war. The Federation turns inward, retreating behind its borders to concentrate on rebuilding, eschewing exploration and diplomacy in favor of strengthening core systems and protecting itself from future attacks. Starships are recalled to patrol the borders, and Starfleet's scientific mandate is abandoned in favor of isolation and protectionism. (Star Trek: Final Frontier)
