Vallien hailed from a polar region of the planet Vulcan, inhabited by an ethnic minority known for blond hair and light skin, noticeably different physical features compared to Vulcan's dark-haired majority.

Like most Vulcans, Vallien was schooled in logic and taught to be non-emotional from childhood. His exact age has not been revealed, but he was considered young (for a Vulcan). Vallien was raised on precepts of logic commonly taught to Vulcans, but did not strive for kolinahr, the elimination of emotion widely held by Vulcans as the height of virtue. Instead he became a disciple of the Sirenahr school, which embraced emotional balance. The reason for this was later discovered to be affliction by the emotion virus which deprived Vulcans of emotional control.

Though trained in the art & skill of mind melding, Vallien was not a certified master; he only engaged in mind melds in extreme (emergency) circumstances.

Vallien served aboard UFS Arcadia from 315 to 324 CE, in the ship's tactical department, often manning the bridge tactical station. After the ship's time jump to 344, he was reassigned to Vashak'ti as first officer, eventually becoming captain.
