origins
Descended from Robert April, captain of the first USS Enterprise, Stephen April was born November 11, 272 CE, in Earth's New England community of Wormwood. Traveling extensively during his youth instilled in April a love for exploration; from an early age he wanted to join Starfleet, inspired by stories of ancestors who had been career officers. Despite an exceptional intelligence, April was also a loner, and spent much of his time growing up personally isolated. His younger brother, Kevin, was lost and presumed dead in 289 (though he later resurfaced). That same year, April joined Starfleet Academy.
Academy
Several incidents plagued April at the Academy, including a second-year (290) flight training accident which took the life of a fellow cadet. He avoided expulsion and nearly resigning thanks to Admiral T'Urla, a Vulcan woman who had a significant impact on his life; however, he was forced to repeat his entire second year. That same year, while awaiting his first deep-space assignment, he saved a Rigelian ambassador from an assassination attempt, earning the first in a series of merit decorations throughout his career. During his time as an Academy trainee, romantic and sexual involvement with several female cadets – including one Lacy Lomupo, who almost bore a child by him – gained April a "Casanova" reputation, a stigma which embarrassed him in later years. Although an intelligent student with keen insights, he graduated with only average marks.
Starfleet career
In 299, while serving on the USS Michigan, April was briefly involved with Ilona, daughter of a Khalindarian dignitary. Unknown to him at the time, Ilona mothered a daughter by him, Neria, whom he met in 316. April served on a handful of ships, mainly in the operational and flight control divisions, taking time out to attend command school, before becoming first officer of the USS Freedom. In 307, the captain's death during an alert condition forced April to take charge, after which he was awarded captaincy. In 310 he received command of the USS Questor, a ship testing an experimental "wormhole drive". Though the project was deemed a failure, Questor served as a standard Starfleet vessel until its destruction in 312 during the final days of the Dominion War.
April's career turned to politics after the war, landing him an assignment as Admiral T'Urla's attaché, serving in the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps as a liaison to the Federation Council and advisor to the Federation president. April learned much in the art of interstellar diplomacy and politics, but longed to resume starship command. In 315 he got his wish, as commanding officer of another Starfleet experiment, the UFS Arcadia. April participated in several historic events as captain of Arcadia, including forging peace with the Borg.
In 319, an incident involving Romulans and an alien species called "the Usurpers" paralyzed April from the neck down, prompting his early retirement from Starfleet. April "found God" for a time, joining a religious revival movement on Earth, but grew disillusioned and in 322, underwent restorative surgery and utilized a reactivation clause in his Starfleet contract, regaining his old job.
The death of April's daughter later that year impacted April deeply, forever altering his personality. In 323 he accepted promotion to admiral, married and tried to settle down while working at Starfleet Command. Unable to resist the "call of the stars", however, he returned to space once again and resumed command of Arcadia, using the vessel as his personal flagship. As of 324, he was still married and the Arcadia's senior commanding officer.

family
April genealogy followed a long and widespread bloodline. April claimed ancestral records going back to Earth's 20th century (pre-CE). April's earliest known direct ancestors were Mark April, a magician and mentalist entertainer, and Lucille "Maven" Henderson, a MACO deployed in a MACO "black ops" division known as "MACO-X", both living in the 22nd century.
- Mark and Maven were the parents of Robert April in this continuity.
The following lists April's immediate ancestors and known relatives, not in exact chronological order. For a more detailed genealogy, see April family tree.
- Mark April / Lucille "Maven" April. Great-great-great grandparents (paternal); parents of:
- Robert M. April (great-great grandfather, paternal). (Robert April had a sister; name unknown.) Married:
- Sarah Poole April (great-great grandmother, paternal). Parents of:
- Samuel April (great-grandfather).
- Robert M. April was not Samuel April's biological father, who was, instead, Christopher Pike. Pike and Sarah Poole had an illicit affair which produced Samuel, whom Sarah passed off as Robert's son. Hence, all descendants of Samuel April are descendants of Poole and Pike.
- Father of:
- Robert T. April (grandfather). Married Dr. Katie David. Parents of:
- Eugene April (uncle).
- Frances April (aunt). Married Pierce MacLeod, father of Rick MacLeod by a previous union with Colleen Hamilton. Parents of:
- Robert Elijah April (father, deceased). With Bethanie Kelly produced:
- Fletcher Kelly (half-brother). Engineer on the USS Horizon, a medical ship commanded by Robert E. April.
Robert E. April married:
- Lorraine Bettina Boone April (mother, deceased). Lorraine's known siblings included Norman Boone (brother) and Ilsa Boone (sister). With William Griffith produced:
- Angela Griffith (half-sister). Married Rick MacLeod (cousin, above); had a son, Charles Nicholas MacLeod.
Lorraine and Robert E. April were the parents of:
- Stephen April. Married Brenda Shoemaker; father of:
- Stephanie Shoemaker-April. Stephanie, with Paul Thunder, had a child (name/gender unknown).
- Father (with Ilona) of:
- Neria (daughter, deceased). In an alternate future timeline, Neria April mothered a son, Kyle April, by a man named Kyle Dexter.
- Father (with Sunni Moon) of a son, name unknown.
- In another alternate timeline, April married Lacy Lomupo. → Parents of Jōb April.
- Kevin April (brother). Married Tina Biddle; fathered Christian April.
relationships
Due to his travels, April maintained little close contact with most of his family, except for his mother. He maintained intermittent contact with his brother, Kevin, sharing a mutual appreciation for art. Extramarital affairs involving April's parents, in trysts with Bethanie Kelly and William Griffith, became a divisive issue in later years for members of the April family. As a result, Bethanie and Lorraine April were at odds at the funeral of April's daughter Neria.
April's isolation from family persisted and grew, despite promotion to admiral and a subsequent relocation to Earth, arising from the emotional impact of his daughter's death, coupled with his innate social status as a "loner" since childhood. More than once he expressed a desire to "bridge the gap" with relatives, a task he found increasingly difficult with passing time. His parents' deaths in 323 only served to deepen the gulf, making him emotionally cold and distant in later years, a condition which rarely if ever changed.
alternate realities
April existed in alternate timelines and parallel universes. He became aware of several of these counterparts, primarily from differing quantum states, during an encounter (316) with Kaliarktos.
- In one alternate reality, 2 married Lacy Lomupo, his Starfleet Academy sweetheart, and fathered a son. He commanded Starbase Montgomery for several years before receiving command of the USS Yorktown. That ship was lost to the Borg before he received command of Arcadia.
- In a brutal reality similar to the mirror universe, April's full name was Stephen Robert April. A conflict known as the "Great War" broke out between the Federation and the Klingons in 230, leading to Klingon occupation of the Federation, which ended sometime in the 24th century during April's lifetime. In this reality, April once threatened his insolent helmsman, Milash, with a phaser, and had an avid sexual relationship with his CMO, Jenna Starr.
- Following is a list of other known counterparts (distinguished by different names and/or ranks/titles) (not including April's mirror universe counterpart).
- Admiral Stephen April. Not to be confused with the "primary" April who was promoted to admiral in 323.
- Ambassador April (not a Starfleet officer)
- Captain-Governor April
- Chief Engineer April
- Commander April. First officer under Captain Bauval.
- Commodore Stephen April
- Diplomatic Officer under command of Lord-Captain Chance
- Elijah April Jr.
- George April
- James Kirk April
- Jonathan April
- Robert April the 4th
- Steven April
- Ulysses April
- Stephen Picard (adopted by the Picard family)
In Arcadia's original continuity (315-317 CE), 2 served on the USS Ganymede early in his career instead of the USS Constitution.
background
- The character of Stephen April was inspired by Robert April in Star Trek: 3000, in which Robert April joined a 31st century crew aboard an "Enterprise-G".
- April's middle name, "Boone", was his mother's surname, inspired by that in a list of potential names for Gene Roddenberry's captain-character in TOS pre-production notes, as detailed in The Making of Star Trek.
- On Arcadia, images of real-life actors are used to simulate characters. In this sense Stephen April is "played" by actor Mel Gibson.
